Veterinary Lighting
How bright should your veterinary lighting be to ensure an optimal working environment for veterinarians and veterinary nurses, regardless of age, task, or individual needs? Medical studies have shown that excessive contrast can contribute to headaches, eye fatigue, and general tiredness. We therefore recommend ambient lighting that provides between 3,000 and 5,000 lux. Many veterinary clinics rely solely on general lighting, such as LED ceiling panels, which typically provide no more than 1,000 lux. This is simply not sufficient. The ideal lighting ratio between examination lighting and ambient lighting is 1:5, allowing the different light sources to work together harmoniously while minimizing eye strain and headaches. In addition to reducing contrast throughout the room, D-tec’s veterinary lighting eliminates glare and minimizes shadows. This creates a more comfortable working environment while reducing distractions and helping prevent mistakes during examinations and surgical procedures. It may sound complicated, but here’s a simple demonstration: Hold one hand approximately ten centimeters above the other. You’ll notice that your upper hand hardly casts a shadow on the lower one. This is possible because our luminaires incorporate small prisms that distribute the light evenly, creating the effect of multiple light sources instead of just one. When selecting veterinary lighting, a closed construction is essential for easy cleaning and hygiene. Our integrated LED modules are fully enclosed within the luminaire and protected by a hygienic aluminum cover, preventing dirt and bacteria from entering the fixture.

The foundation of optimal veterinary lighting is maintaining an illuminance of 3,000 to 5,000 lux. Our optional dynamic lighting function, available for the Leaf, Cloud, Clair, and Brite Triton models, takes this one step further. Our standard colour temperature is 5700 K, but with the dynamic lighting option your staff can use a timer to gradually adjust the colour temperature throughout the day, simulating the natural progression of daylight. Dynamic veterinary lighting often leads to improved concentration, increased alertness, and enhanced overall well-being.
